Many Gambians who grow up in the 1980's and 1990's can remember the melodious voice of Shiek Omar Bun Jeng (Omar Fadera). His simple and down to earth approach to religion made him well respected and admired all around the Senegambia.
His many sermons on radio Gambia increased his popularity and reach to all over the Gambia. Born in Kiang and raised in Senegal, Bun can speak fluently in both Wollof and Mandinka. Those who listen to his Mandingo lectures alone never think he could deliver brillaint lectures in Wollof as in Mandinka. But Bun was versatile, melodious and humble.
His Qur'anic recitation is also highly touching. Bun Jeng settled in Kombo Gunjure until his death in 1995. The whole country mourn his demise.
Rest In peace, Bun, May Allah grant you jannah and forgive you your mistakes. Amen
